Is it not true that in tyrannical society, freedom of thought is suppressed?

For example... you are supposed to be 'patriotic' in a limited sense by going with the statue quo? But in a truly free society, thinking 'outside the BOX' is encouraged and welcomed in a dialectic sort of way? If you have an opinion, do you mind sharing it?
